I'm actually not worrying too much about the "why" of things, especially if it's something he can't really discuss in depth... anything about where the dead's souls are being held or whatever seems to be pretty hush-hush.
Better to just focus on what we do have and work from there, right?
Yeah...no, I get that, but you know. Can't hurt to ask as much as we can to see what we actually have to work with. Maybe it won't actually help us, but we won't know until we go over the options. [ but he does shrug and goes back to watching the fish. ] Then again, we just got a ton of new stuff to keep ourselves busy.
Well you're right, usually my interests are a lot more machine-like. Robot expos and stuff. But my sister did try to take me more "normal" places for the experiences when we were able to.
[ read as: "when we could afford it." ]
Aquariums were some of the easier options and I always kind of liked these things. [ he gestures to the tunnels. ]
Man, that's cool. I never had the chance to do that kinda stuff when I was younger! Heh, I bet those kinds of memories with your sister were real special.
Nothing stopping you now, right? That's the other good thing about these places. [ they're open for everyone to embrace the things they missed growing up. but there's, like, sort of a smile and something a little more complicated in his expression then. ]
Yeah, they were. Are? Are. [ ... ] Our parents divorced when I was nine, so we didn't get to live in the same house after that. But she still came to visit a lot. It's just that in the last few years she got pretty busy with work and stuff. [ ... ] She's kind of the reason I have to make sure everything here works out. I have to get back to her.
[ for a second, ichiban starts to crouch down to be a little more on shoma's level—before he catches himself and straightens back up. he's sure shoma's had enough moments of unintentional talking down to (both literal and metaphorical) due to his condition to last a lifetime, and he doesn't want to be another tally on that list. so instead, he just places a solid hand on shoma's shoulder. ]
All right? We're gonna figure out what the hell these last few weeks have been about, we're gonna save everyone, and we're all gonna go home. You with me? 'Cause I'm with you, man.
[ well. he does appreciate ichiban not talking down to him so this does help. and normally he's not big on touch, but he allows this. ]
Definitely. [ and he seems sure of that. ] We're...really, really close to some kind of breakthrough. I can feel it. But we're gonna need to keep everybody on track and not let people backslide or think the worst when something doesn't work right away. That's where we're going to need your help.
Dude, I'm actually not bullshitting you. I seriously used to be the president of a major holdings company before I decided to step down and give the business back to its original owner.
The girl who inherited the company from her grandpa asked me for help to save it from these greedy jackasses who didn't have any respect for her family's line of work. I'll be totally honest, I had no freakin' clue what I was doing at first... but even so, I could tell how dedicated she was to keeping her grandfather's legacy alive. She was so willing to believe in me that she trusted me with her dream. How could I say no to that?
So, we kept at it, and we both learned a lot along the way... long story short, we eventually became one of the biggest companies in the country! And once I knew she could handle running things without me, I gave total ownership back to her and told her to keep smiling, because she made her pops proud.
Well, it being a holding company means we had our hand in a lot of other companies... but that's a story for another time, heh.

Oh yeah—she's doing great! She's taking some time for herself on a world tour. If anyone deserves it for working their ass off to get where they are today, it's her.
That's...really cool that you were able to do that for her, actually. It takes a lot of dedication to change your own life to try and help somebody with theirs.
Dude! [ indignant! cruelty! he's swatting at ichiban's hand and fails to avoid the ruffling, but honestly it's fine considering he doesn't look nearly as bothered as he sounds. there's a difference between doing this kind of thing versus someone doing it thinking he's twelve. his hair's kind of a mess anyway so who cares. they really did get off track though and he considers the question. ]
Mm...she's great. Pretty much the most important person in the world. She's one of the hardest-working people I've ever known and she always takes on way more responsibility than she really should have to. We're six years apart, so she's always taken care of me even when we weren't living together and she went to live with our mom. [ but he's busy looking at the jellyfish instead of ichiban while he continues. ] ...my mom left because my dad wasn't making enough money for us, and even after the divorce he was still trying to make his career work instead of getting a job that actually paid decently. So she started working to help us out. I'm still not really sure how she juggled classes and working nights and weekends, but...she's pretty bad about asking for help when she needs it and tries to do everything on her own though, like, all the time. She usually prioritizes the people she cares about before herself.

Okay, yeah, saying it all like that really does make it sound like complete bullshit. B-but I'm not lying, I swear!

Dude. Mizuki's the CEO of an entertainment company, owner of a maid café and a special agent. Your thing at least sounds a little more plausible than all that. [ but it...sounds kind of sweet, actually, to think that he really only stepped in because someone asked for help. ]
Guess you really couldn't say no. And it sounds like it worked out really well for both of you. You're still in touch with her?
